Experiential Workshops on Climate Change and Peak Oil Print E-mail

One-day workshops where participants explore their personal responses to these issues, learn about ways to respond powerfully and creatively, and leave empowered to act now.

The "Heart of" Workshops

Climate change is everywhere - radio, TV and newspapers - and especially so since Al Gore's immensely successful documentary, "An Inconvenient Truth". The drought is hitting Australia worse than we thought possible. But what does it really mean for our future? Should we care? What can we do about it? For many of us climate change is either a bit of an unknown, so big that it all seems a long way away – or just too much to think about!

Similarly, oil is the lifeblood of industrial society, and we are about to reach peak production. By some, it is assumed that once oil runs out, a technological fix will suddenly reverberate throughout the world seamlessly. However, it may not be so simple; our nation's dependency on oil has passed the point of smooth return. When considering this, many of us naturally experience some foreboding or fear. It is tempting to place the issue of peak oil into the too-hard basket.

Indeed, climate change and energy depletion are both huge challenges, interrelated in many respects – however, both these crises present our society with unprecedented opportunities to rise to the challenge in a way that it has never done before.

But first, we need to acknowledge our fears and work past any emotional barriers that we may have, towards inspired and creative responses. In addition to examining the challenges, we need to explore the inspiring things going on, and what we can do about it in our own backyards to improve the future and prosperity of our communities.

In these workshops we:

  • investigate these issues in a way that allows us to thoroughly explore the implications;
  • learn about ways we can respond powerfully and creatively – and have fun too!
  • connect with other people in the Melbourne community interested in these issues;
  • leave empowered to act, now.
You should attend this workshop if:
  • you have become aware of either of these issues, newly or not, and are concerned what they will mean;
  • you are keen to explore and learn about positive responses to it.

The workshops usually start at 9.30am and end at 5.00pm. Lunch is provided and there are several short breaks at regular intervals inbetween.

These workshops are GaiaVic initiatives.
